Circular No 439

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 3 April 2010 No.439
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
A new friend has written to us, Raphael Howchung, welcome to the ALUMNI Newsletter and the Association of Alumni.
While you read this Circular, you can watch the latest video that Glen Mckoy sent me:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Laci,
My name is Raphael Benedict How Chung, and I attended Abbey School during the period ( 1960-66) .
I was in St Francis House and I played Soccer and Cricket during my time there.
I also ran for Abbey School against the other secondary schools, but was not very successful in the 100 and 200 yards race then.......
I have always wondered what became of my compadres since we all went separate ways..........whatever became of the likes of John Fimian, Allan Apo, David Chow Chong, Terrence Ferreira, Paul Tadros, Fernandes etc.......
I see Richard Clerk at Mass from time to time, and I also see our ex-coach, Desmond De Nobriga. also known as "Tuco".
I hear that Harry Laughlin lives in Haleland Park, but I have not been able to hook up with him.
I am aware that Dennis Gurley is in the legal profession, and he's in Trinidad, like me.
I met his younger brother at a "wine and cheese” function, Christian, and we promised to keep in touch, but that never materialised.
Actually, when I left the Abbey School, I went to a Catholic Jesuit University, St Mary's University, in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I met quite a few Ex- Abbey boys there.
There were the Henderson brothers," Cush" I had known whilst at the Abbey, his elder brothers, I had only heard of them....the Gurley brothers were there, together with the Herrera brothers, Allan being my contemporary.
When I was leaving SMU, the Poon Tips and Bhagan boys were just arriving.
Oh, Roger Ames was also at SMU when I was there, and I forgot, Ian O Connor and Lee Teung et al.
I see Charlie Kong Ting and his brother Kenneth every now and again.
Please!!! Gentlemen of the Mount, if you have info, please share it as we continue to re-establish past relationships.
I remember Bro Vincent, but I did not know what became of him until I read your recent e-mail.
Got to go now, but please let us continue to keep in touch.
Raphael.

Josh (Joe) Schoemaker and Attila Gyuris meet again after 40 years.

Wed, February 10, 2010 1:22:09 PM

Hi, Attila.
This was so nice, to get your email reporting your recent reunion with Josh.
The photographs tell a great story, too, and thank you for sending them on to all of us, who have been suitably impressed.
I'd also never seen the pic of your 2nd MSB patrol, with both you and Josh featured, so I'll add it to my "Scouting" pic.
I would hope that, now that you have found one another again, you'll be able to keep in touch more regularly.
Of such contacts are commitments made.
Wishing you both well, you and your families.

Well, it finally happened last Saturday Feb 6, 2010.
After having to postpone this reunion for one reason or another, we finally met.
We were able to carve out some time out of our busy schedules for a long-overdue reunion at Joe Schoemaker's beautiful house in Orange County California.
We had been living only about 40 minutes away all these years without knowing it.
The last time we saw or heard from each other was when we said goodbye at the Abbey School Senior dorm on the third floor as we were furiously packing in our cubicles to go home,
After having sat for the last "O" Level GCE test, sometime in June 1969.
We used to know him as "Josh" at the Mount, but since his real name is Joseph, when he and his family moved to Hilo, on the big island of Hawaii, (right after we both finished Form V in 1969), his name in the US became Joe.
So it is Joe from now on.
Joe and wife Adrienne have 3 children, two older daughters (in their mid to late 20's), and a younger son, Matthew, 20.
His two daughters were not there, as they have moved out for jobs elsewhere.
One daughter is in Singapore and the other is married and living in the Middle East, they are both chefs.
Youngest son Matthew is still living at home and is studying at a local college to work in the food and beverage industry.
His charming wife, Adrienne is from Texas.
Joe has dual degrees, one in pure Chemistry and then one in Chemical Engineering.
He made a career working in the food processing industry and now he owns his own engineering consulting company, TriTek Inc.
He is fortunate to be working out of his home.
His wife Adrienne runs the home office and keeps the books.
It was a magical evening, meeting Joe after 40 years of not seeing or knowing of him.
He was one of my best friends at the Mount.
We were together in the house of St. Anthony, in the Aqualads swim team, in the Woodpeckers patrol in Scouts, and of course in all the same Forms in school for the entire 5 years we were there.
During "Parent's" day at the Mount, Joe's mom and dad always "adopted" me as my surrogate parents for the day.
Sometimes, during the long holiday weekends, and once for the entire Easter vacation, he would invite me to spend it (when we were allowed to leave) as a guest at his house in the sugar plantation, where his Dad worked as a manager.
Those outings were always so special for me since all my family was far away in Caracas.
Also, there were quite a few girls in that beautiful compound where they lived in the sugar plantation, so you can imagine me, a Mount boy, suddenly let loose on unsuspecting girls,... girls,.. real girls, everywhere!!!
It didn't really matter what they looked like. : - )
All in all it, was a wonderful evening, Joe and Adrienne are looking terrific and in good health.
We did a lot of "catching up" about our lives during the last 40 years.
Interestingly, we hardly reminisced at all about the old Mount days.
Time just flew by, and suddenly it was time to leave.
We will leave the Mount reminiscing for our next get-together at my house in Lake Mathews, where I will bring out all the old photos.
See attached 10 pictures of the reunion, plus one old Mount Scout camp photo to see what we looked like then, for those of you who might not remember.

OK.
I may be wrong with some of these dates, so I'll need you guys to correct me.
I have it on record that you, Attila, left MSB in 1969. (Correct?)
YES THAT IS CORRECT
Now, there seems to have been 3 Roquefort boys who were OB's at MSB. Their names were, I'm told, Manuel (1967), Jose (1969) and Carlos (1974). If you are one of the Roquefort boys were both together in Scouts at the same time, I'd have to say that the name of the boy you refer to as "Roquefort the Younger" must have been Jose. Then, if you had fistfights with his older brother, your opponent must have been Manuel. Carlos would have been too young to be involved in a scrap with you, I'd say.
Any sense in this?
YES IT MAKES SENSE. BUT I ONLY REMEMBER TWO ROQUEFORTS THOUGH. I CANNOT VERIFY FOR SURE EITHER OF THEIR FIRST NAMES
MAYBE SOMEONE WITH BETTER MEMORY THAN MINE WILL PIPE UP.

You may be right, but we need someone to verify it.
Also, I need first names for boy #1 (Roquefort, the younger).
He had an older brother who was also in Scouts, with whom I used to get into fistfights all the time.
I got the first name for # 4,... it is CARLOS Malaver.
I am attaching the photo again; to see if anyone could help out with the first names.
Waiting for a response from someone who remembers.
Anybody?

This correspondence has opened up memories of two previously unmentioned OB's - Lee Hong Sing and McCartney.
My notes to date indicate that there were 3 McCartney Boys who attended school at MSB - Thomas, Raymond and Richard.
So far, only Richard has been listed as a 2nd MSB Scout.
Therefore, I'd say that the odds are, that the boy identified as "McCartney" could very well be Richard McCartney.
Thanks, fellas.

Hi Specs:
Yes it was a wonderful meeting.
Long overdue. Just to think we lived so close all these years without knowing it!
To answer your question... You do remember it correctly.
As I described in my report below, Josh did indeed move to Hilo, (one of the big island of Hawaii,) with his parents right after he got out of Form V at the
And that's where they stayed for the rest of their lives. (not a bad place to stay, I may add).
(By the way, Hawaii is part of the USA.
It is the 50th State, incorporated in 1959.
It is the only State of the USA composed entirely of tropical islands.... Maybe you meant the "Mainland" USA ?.)
Anyway, while living in Hawaii, Josh graduated from High school, then got a BA degree in Chemistry from a small local college there, and after that, he decided he wanted to go on to get a Chemical Engineering degree.
Except that career degree was not offered in Hawaii where he lived!
So he applied to the University of Oregon (that's in the mainland, on the West Coast of the US, just above California), and received his Chem., E. degree from there.
After graduating from the University of Oregon, he never returned to live in Hawaii, as he went on to jobs with food processing companies all located in the US Mainland.
He is now self-employed as a consultant and works out of his house mostly.
Thanks for the names on the scout camp photo.
Would you remember McCartney's first name?
Regards,
Attila Gyuris
PS:  I will gladly convey your regards when I see him next. But you all can write him directly also!

Hi Attila,
What a great e-mail and such a wonderful experience.
Man, the last time I saw Josh was at Mount.
Josh & his parents lived at Sevilla in Caroni and were very friendly with Robert Wakefield.
I was always under the impression that Josh moved and settled in Hawaii … was not aware he moved to the USA .
Kindly give him my fondest regards when you speak with him.
Attila, you and your family look great.
The two unidentified people in your Scout camp photo are: # 8 Mc Cartney & # 5 Lee Hong Sing
Take care my friend and have happy, healthy and peaceful 2010.
Michael.

Now with winter approaching, I will make every effort to so do.

Thank you Art,
Its always a great pleasure to hear from you, your words travel far, an original Grand Master, of the Knights from, "White Stones".
As we follow in your foot steps, we do what we can, when we can, I am also going thru a separation, for some months now, everyone needs a little space and time I too have my own problems, but it to will come to past, but when one health is involved, all else is less.
I remember you speaking to me, of people praying together, such a great healing power, for all involved in the process.
Its always good to hear from you, Good or bad, you hold a power in this group, only brothers like yourself, the original builders, when you say something, every one listens.
You also said, if money was raised for Kitty, why don't we just give the woman, the money.
Well Art I am sorry, I am now relaying that message.
Please give my best regards to Val & family.
A humble servant.
Respectfully yours,
Glen McKoy.

Cecil,
Congratulations on your recent award of "The Golden Cross" which came through Clive in Spain;
you sure put a lot of time and effort into The Tourist Industry, and B'dos is now the safest W.I
Island for Tourism; hence our continuing visits, plus Jack's 'brood' there.
We will be there in Jan from 5th for 3 weeks, and son Ed and his entourage of 7 others will be joining us for 2 weeks at the Bath Area, so keep in touch with Eve.
Really looking forward to sun & fun.
As ever in Christ, love to Liz,

Just a short note that we are not sending cards this year, to help our rain froests, and save postage.
Hello all you'
Just want to wish greetings and joy from Nova Scotia, and let you know we are still alive.
Guess you must be seeing time fly by as we grow happier and more wonderful.
We are all fine, and toying around with maintaining fun, excitement and routines, plus catching up on family and friends back here and overseas.
My health has vastly improved, and we are doing a lot more activities now, even though I have lost 30 lbs; the light weight is an asset.
Now I am on an exercise programme to build back some muscle, without stressing the old heart.
Lots of routines, diet and zest, plus variety and balance; absolutely exciting and motivational stuff, with great progress and enthusiasm.
Rise at 5.45 am and we crash usually at between 9.00 -11.00 pm plus if the action is needed (but this includes a siesta at about 1.00 till whenever.
Marvellous. Trying to sort out Christmas Gathering at us, but lots of other alternatives of our Nova Scotia Clan, so may go to New Brunswick to Derek's do.
Will eventually fall into place.
Leave on 6th Jan for B'dos for 3 weeks, and Ed & entourage of eight will meet there for two weeks up in the "Bath" area on the East Coast, and lap up some sun & fun.
All else fine, no major challenges, thank The Good Lord, and lots of opportunities and possibilities hovering in the atmosphere.
Love to all your family and those we may have missed out.
All the very Best for Christmas, and a Fabulous New Year.
Love and God's guidance,
As always,
Val & Art

From: George Mickiewicz
Hi Nigel,
Read in recent newsletter that the full amount needed was successfully collected.
A big thanks to all MSB men who donated.
A special recognition to you for leading this effort; without your leadership the money would not have been collected and the gift to the 24 deacons would not have been accomplished.
Great job my friend!!!
Looking forward to seeing the pictures of the new deacons.
May God continue to bless you for all you do for us,

HI George!
Greetings! When you get the opportunity please tell me something about yourself since you left the Mount........
It's been a while! What part of the world are you now living?
As you may have heard I am living in the good USA, and have been since 1969.
With all our problems, it is still the best, in my opinion!
Yes, tremendous kudoes are due to Nigel for the yeoman job that he did in 'quarter- backing, 'this project for the 'Old Boys'.
I hope to say something more about this in the near future.
I know that the project went 'over the top', again, due to the indefatigable job that Nigel did, but it should not have been as laborious as it was, if he had more support from most sectors of this impressive group of men! But more of this anon.
We must also not forget the enormous contributions  that some of our other leaders did for us---the Arthur Knaggs, Ladislao Kertesz,, Gordon Mitchells, etc.
By their trail-blazing efforts in getting us together, by means of all those Circular Letters and Photos in order to make this possible.
Much more to say but later.
I wanted to use your false name, but lucky for you, I forgot!
God bless you all and your families.
Fraternally yours,
Lionel/Brother Vincent/Deacon or whatever.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------.
From: George Mickiewicz
Hi Lionel
I am very excited to hear from you.
You are so right about the other key MSB graduates that lead, created and sustain our global network.
Recognition and great appreciation goes to them also.
I came to the USA in 1963 after graduating from MSB.
Went to university and obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering.
As many professionals, due to business needs, have lived in many cities (Rochester, Detroit, Wilmington, Parkersburg, Charleston, Bloomington) and states (NY, MI, DE, WV, IL).
Married Fara, a Cuban refugee, in 1970.
God blessed us with three children (Marc, Matt and Melisa) and currently four grandchildren ranging in age from 2 to 9.
I worked with DuPont all my career.
My last assignment was at a plant in Memphis, TN.
I lost my job after 37 years in 2006 during one of the many downsizing efforts that take place in the american manufacturing businesses.
Left my situation in God's hands and the Lord blessed me with the opportunity to become a consultant through DuPont.
Most of my work in the last 4 years has been in India
That experience left me with a strong impression of how blessed we are in the westen world versus the abject poverty that is so evident and visible in that very poor country.
Have also done consulting work in Mexico and different parts of the USA;  I am currently involved in a project in Texas
I work 25-50% of my time allowing me to enjoy the benefits of a retiree the rest of the time; especially spending time together with my children and grandchildren.
I live in Collierville,TN, which is located outside of Memphis
I am attaching a picture of me with my grandchildren.
I will also take this opportunity to thank you and share my appreciation for all you did for me personally and all other MSB "boys".
To me you were the epitome of a true leader who loved, guided and taught us so many things.
My love for sports today is a direct result of your leadership in all the different sports in which we participated.
You were the only one who provided and took care of all our physical needs.
The myriad of things that you did visibly and invisibly for all of us are a tribute to your big heartand loving soul.
When I picture you today, I still remember the heartful wide smile that you always had on your face.
I must confess that as boy then, I was heart broken when I learnt of your departure after returning to MSB from one of our vacations.
As a man today, I fully understand, respected support your decision.
I am sure that it was God who sent you to Brazil then and to different parts of the world thereafter.
You are to be congratulated and praised for personally being a deacon in God's work today and for enabling/supporting the deaconate inception in Trinidad
I do not have the capability nor the right words to express my love for you personally and appreciation for all the kindness and help that you provided for me!
Thanks, Gracias, Merci.
May God bless you, your family and your work in your community,
George
PS - You probably remember me as Yury or better as "SHISH"

Mi amigo Anthony,
I would not use the word overwriting Judge, I would say, a judge who use few words but express so much, I am the over writer,
I say the same things over and over in different ways, to express so little at times, ha!ha!, however, when we do look into our hearts, we can find the right words, if we travel on the right path and recognize the value of divine inspiration.
Yes, I did set the tone, I am always trying to get you guys to talk, I love to play chess, and my playing field is the mind, ha! ha!
And so few I find that can play, you are too good for me, you be the judge, I'll be the jester ha! ha!
Take care, best regards to the really smart one (your wife Cintra), later my friend, have a wonderful weekend,
Cheers! Glen.

Hola Compadre,
Muchas gracias for your response.
My wife, Cintra, who is usually right says that there are times when I just seem to get the right words t express myself succinctly.
That is when I recognize the value of Divine inspiration.
I have learnt that there is truth in the saying that an over-speaking judge is like an ill-sounding cymbal.
I suppose this saying can apply to an overwriting judge.
I have no objection to your sharing my views with our brothers.
It would be more correct to say our views because you set the tone for what I wrote.
Thanks for sending your telephone number.
With kind regards,
Anthony

Hola Anthony,
It’s good to read, your so true comments, I like the part about the first generation, after independence, a pride to build a nation.
I remember those days.
You have said so much, in so few words, all I can say is, Bravo for just being Real.
As a true brother, you can only get my highest respect, like the many other great minds, of this great Club, of Abbey School Alumni.
Thank you for discussing these topics of interest with me, I think I know you, much better today, I certainly like what I read,
I know it is difficult for you to write for the circular, due to your position, but I would like to share some of your words with a few others, like yourself if you don't mind, within the circle.
best regards

I concur; we are indeed brothers in the true sense, not in a meaning that is construed in varying terms of generality.
I hope to visit Hamilton for a few days during the first week of February .
I misplaced your telephone number, could you e-mail same.
I will telephone you when I get there.
You are correct as usual.
A person is admitted to membership after an assessment of the individual and upon very good recommendations.
The process, among other things, includes an interview by the senior honchos of the proposed Lodge.
I presume to ensure that the applicant is not joining for a selfish reason or to promote himself.
The quest, as I understand it is for knowledge and to improve oneself in the area of spiritual and moral values.
But, as you know, there are some who join for there own selfish reasons and to make contacts in various fields on order to advance themselves in the business world or institutions to which they belong by directly or indirectly seeking favours or favourable consideration in personal progress.
If we joined any group it was not for a selfish reason.
Because:
At the Abbey school we became part of a legacy handed down by the monks who came here.
They brought with them a different culture that they were able to blend with not only the local culture but that of other Caribbean countries and Venezuela.
So a legacy was left from which we have benefited.
Those of us who were at the "Mount' became brothers indeed.
We knew that every creed and race has an equal place, before Eric Williams coined the phrase.
We knew all about practicing discipline production and tolerance before Eric Williams said those were to be the "watch words" of independent Trinidad and Tobago.
So we were prepared for the future.
Yes amigo we are compadres in the true sense or preferably if you choose: brothers.
Avec mes meilleures salutations,
Anthony

Dear Anthony,
We are all natural Masons, not just only your brothers you show kindness to, but all.
You are a judge, and you must judge fairly without bias, and giving your best judgement under all circumstances.
These clubs are modern day imitation of the great ancient clubs, and I find them more a good place to meet other business men, that's what I saw, and the essence of the great teachings are there for those who seek knowledge, however I found many were in it, for the business connections, and not for its true intrinsic value.
You must be an upright person, and believe in God, in order to be a mason.
So you would qualify very easy.
Now with Mount Boys, I find something greater than any of these clubs, which many of us do belong to.
We lived together, we came from that same spiritual place, a home we call "The Castle", the Abbey School, we are so unique, you cannot buy into it, you cannot join us, if you did not attend the school, we were like chosen to this place, which I think is a privilege, in the times when an education was a difficult thing to obtain, and we had the best, thanks to the wisdom of our parents.
Anthony all the names you see in the Circular and emails, are all upright gentlemen, and proud brothers, those who never contact us, and you never hear from, they have their reasons why, not all the people, in a church are believers, ha! ha! Anyhow, I only treasure one brotherhood, and that's "The Knights of White Stones", and you are part of it, its not by choice its just destiny my friend.
Best regards, to you and your family for 2010, your brother from " The Invisible Tribe, of an "Imaginary Tale", written in a book you cannot buy, "The King of Hearts", of the "The Knights of White Stones", long live the Mount..
Its always a pleasure, to hear from you,
Glen.

Dear Glen,
In 1985 or thereabouts while I was the Corporate Secretary and In-house Counsel of Royal bank of Trinidad and Tobago as it was then, Hubert Aleyne of Caribbean Light recommended me for membership .
All was going well until the night of initiation then I had to postpone.
Many were disappointed.
When I became a judge here in T&T in 1987 it was mentioned that the so called Code of Ethics provided that judges should not be members of any private club or secret society so that ended that.
Many friends and relatives are "brothers".
I have read the Lost Symbol by Dan Brown among other good books.
Most masons I know are genuine persons.
You certainly qualify.
I had suspected that you belong to the "brotherhood", believe it or not it appears silently in some of your e-mails.
With kind regards,
Anthony

Hello Anthony,
Yes I am a Mason, I was very active many years back, but not active anymore,
I became a Mason in the early 80's, in my quest for knowledge,
I do like ancient history, and Masons do have that, you are very good in your observation, are you a Mason also?
Best regards –
Glen.

Peter,
Did you know that Winston Churchill warned of this, give one inch and they will take a mile, don't worry we still have 1 billion Indians, and 1 billion Chinese then there are the Russians, lets see how far they could push this, as for the west, well its the beginning of the end, what a time to live in, where is the love or peace in the near future. for the children of the free world.
This is not a good subject, however we must address it, if it’s in your face.
Long live our Club, one for all, and all for one, thru all these things we must survive, we will always be a secret, never forget you have a brother here, there and everywhere,
Take care all my brothers, and enjoy the free world as long as we can.
Best regards.
Glen.
