Dear Friends,
MSB TAXI SERVICE
...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: George Mickiewicz
Hi Ladislao,
Interesting new service established by monks at MSB.
Remember the old VW mini-buses from our times!!!!
I once flew out from one of them as the door flew open at a curve and I was sitting right next to it.
God bless,
George.
MONKS LAUNCH TAXI SERVICE
The Pilgrims will benefit from a new TAXI service launched at Mount St Benedict on Tuesday 01 September 2009.
This service replaces the former Bus Service which deteriorated over the past few years.
PLACID, the first Suzuki APV seven-seater Taxi, began operating on Tuesday 01 and will soon be joined by MAURUS, on Saturday 05 September 2009.
The vehicles have been named after the early disciples of St Benedict, and the patrons of Benedictine Novices.
The first vehicle, PLACID, was blessed by the Abbot in the presence of all the monks on Sunday 30 August 2009, in front of the Monastic Refectory.
The second vechicle, MAURUS, which was delivered to the Abbey on Friday 04 September 2009, was blessed after Evening Prayer on the same day.
MAURUS and PLACID are also the monastic names of the first two Trinidadians to become monks of the Abbey of Mount St Benedict.
Fr Abbot passed his Regulations and Driving Test on Thursday 03 September as he successfully applied for his TAXI Badge.
The Abbot has encouraged other monks and employees to obtain their TAXI Badges, as this may prove useful at some time.
The service will be operated by some experienced persons with "H" Badges.
The TAXIS will be stationed at the Abbey.
It is hoped that this will prove to be a more efficient means of transport for the pilgrims.

My name is Conrad Boney a student of the seventies,
Just saying that it is really sad but we all have to move on, Ms. Markus was a very nice lady during the my time at the Abbey, a pleasant person to talk too, always willing to listen in her soft quiet way,
When last I spoke to her was at the reunion in 2008 and she remembered my name to which I was amazed, I recall her driving her Volkswagen to school (off white), truly remarkable personality,
God bless her soul.

Re: 1950 Football Team - Identifications

OK.
Thanks, Alain.
So, it's simply ONE of the Football teams from the Mount in 1950.
Perhaps one of the "House Teams" - you know- like St. Anthony House, St. Lawrence House, or St. Francis House.
I wonder which House Philip et al were members of??

Hi Nigel,
I confirm the names given by Phillip Cleg, but I really cannot put the names on the unknowns, although I remember their faces very well.
However, this football team was not The MSB FOOTBALL TEAM but just one of the different teams that played against each other during the 1950 season.
Yours truly,
Alain Devaux

Gentlemen,
Here are the names of the boys who formed the 1950 MSB Football Team, according to the identifications offered by Phillip Clegg:
<1950 MSB Football Team w: Philip Clegg.jpg>
Back Row L-R: Unknown, Ian Shoul, John Lopes, Phillip Shoul, Unknown (probably Cuthbert Gittens?)
Middle Row L - R: Edward Xavier, Hugh Henderson, Unknown (Perhaps AubreyGeorge ???)
Front Row L - R: Earl Kayne, Stephen Shoul, Bruce Marquez
Before I release this to Ladislao Kertsz for his distribution, would you please see whether you can confirm the names suggested by Phillip, and even try to fill in the unknowns for us.
Thank you very much.

Hi Nigel,
I seem to have caused a bit of a 'kafuffle' when I sent you the photo of myself and the others and captioned it;
The 1950 FOOTIE TEAM - it was just a remark that came off of the top of my head - a way that I still have of expressing myself sometimes that I picked up in Australia a long time ago when living there as I had for ten years –
the Aussies seem to add an 'ie' to almost everything over there - I just did it without thinking.
With respect to the photo of the 1950 football team that I had sent you previously,
I cannot claim to know all of the names but I do know most of them –
I am absolutely definite about all of the names except for that of, Joseph Azar and Gittens - from top to bottom, and from left to right - here they are:
1.   ? - Was it Joseph Azar?
2.   Ian Shaoul
3.   John Lopes
4.   Myself, Phillip Clegg - 14 years of age - left MSB the next year - 1951.
5.   Don't know, but for some reason the name of Gittens keeps coming to mind - ?
6.   Xavier, was definitely his surname - but the first name - ?
7.   Hugh Henderson ( I'd like to get an update on him if  possible)
8.   Earl Kayne
9.   Steven Shoul
10.  Bruce Marques
Glad to be of some little help - I have to say that it's just a bit off-putting to see just how few there are of my age group that are still around!
I notice that in a previous data sheet it was stated that Chris Krogh had died, but in this latest data sheet this is not mentioned - did he or did he not?
If he were still alive I certainly would like to say hello before one of us kicks the bucket.
I would have liked to have said Hi to Leary O'Connor, Hugh Henderson, Alain Devaux and whosoever else would like to say hello to me.
My dear old mom used to say,"If you have something to say, say it now as tomorrow may never come".
A big thanks to both yourself and Ladislaio Kertesz for doing the great work that is being done by both of you - much appreciated - just in time for some of us I'd say!
Best regards,
Phillip Clegg

Good day, Phillip,
I hope that this email finds you in good health.
I'm coming to you again, to ask a question:
Would you be able to help us to identify some / all of the names of the team members recorded in this photograph of the MSB 1950 "Footie" Team, which you had first brought to our attention in August 2009.
Also, what a strange name.... "Footie" ..... any particular reason?

Yes, that's right Nigel.
It was one of the house sport teams that Father Bernard made up when he came back from England.
I don't remember which was the one Philip played for, or if he himself remembers, but I am pretty sure mine was St.Benedict's house.
However, the 1953 football team ( with the V on the seater) you showed us a few months ago seems to be the real college team.

MSB Old Boys DataBase August 26, 2010
From: Nigel P. Boos
Pete,
I first came to Ontario in '74 to study at Western for my MBA.
Then, after many adventures here & there, I returned, this time to Alberta, in '89.
Laid off in '99, I moved to Ontario again in '99 and been here ever since.
Re. locations, a quick count shows, to the best of my knowledge:
Alberta                                   7 Old Boys
Australia                                13
B.C.                                        11
Barbados                                13
Brazil                                     1
Guyana                                   16
New Brunswick                      2
New Zealand                          2
Ontario                                   71
Quebec                                   13
St. Lucia                                 6
U.K.                                        16
USA                                       57
Venezuela                              26
Note: These numbers are definitely incorrect, because I do not have any location information on hundreds of OB's. as yet.
Hope this helps a bit.
Nigel
