Caracas, 29 May 2010 No.447
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,
Some old correspondence that was exchanged between ASAA in the past and a recall of the probable causes for the Abbot´s negative response?
Also, some sad news.

Subject: Some Sad News
All,
Sorry about the late notice, but with all that is going on, I really did not remember to call you yesterday.
Some sad news, my mother (84) died suddenly on Monday afternoon (Aortic dissection).
The funeral is on Thursday at 11.00AM at the Curepe Presbyterian Church tonight there is a wake service the same church at 7.00PM.

ASAA Bank and Auditor.
From: Chris Knowles
Dear Dennis,
Further to the developments of last week Peter has named Scotia Bank Trinidad and Tobago Limited of 56 Eastern Main Road, Tunapuna as a suitable bank for our purposes.
Ian Gomes suggested Milton Julien, an old boy, as Auditor.
Unfortunately Milton has declined as says that he does not satisfy the requirements for the appointment, and so the search continues.
It appears that ex-MSB Chartered Accountants are rare if not non-existent!
I will continue to search (for a pro bono arrangement if possible) and I would appreciate any further help available.
That is the state of play.
Regards,
Chris.

Don,
Looking back at the correspondence on this matter, it does not appear that I ever thanked you for your interesting insight as to the possible reason for the Abbot's refusal to allow us to use the words "Abbey School" within the name of our organization.
Let me correct that right now.
I do sincerely thank you for your response, and look forward to continuing our correspondence on this and other matters, as they arise.
To all the Members of the ASAA Committee
It appears, however, that there might be another spoke in the wheels as well.
From what I'm told, the Gift Shop might also be a part of the problem.
I understand that, because of the shortage of monks at the Monastery, at some point in the past, the Gift Shop had been handed over to a lay person, name unknown, to run it on their behalf.
A not very good job was done and there proved to be shortages of this and that, the shop was maintained very shabbily and poor management in general was the order of the day.
The concessionaire eventually opened up another shop in Arima, using the name of the Abbey.
This created problems, and as I understand it, the Monastery eventually took over and closed down the Arima operation.
One can therefore appreciate the sensitivity surrounding the use of the Abbey's name, and this could explain Fr. Abbot's response.
But it leads one to a more basic question, doesn't it?
And it is this - in light of these two distinct and serious situations, both of which have impacted on MSB,
I wonder whether the Monastery has ever employed the services of a legal advisor, and if not, why not?
The assets of MSB are vested personally in the Abbot, as Corporation sole, and it would appear that either today or in the past, decisions may have been taken and contracts may /may not have been signed without proper legal advice.
Such advice would have precluded the possibility of the infractions above.
We have lawyers within our ranks, who should be able to offer advice to the Abbot.
It is a shame that there seems to be a divide between the Abbot and the ASAA.
It should be clear to everyone now, that we, as a group, have the affairs of the Monastery at heart.
We want to help.
We are like a little army of qualified soldiers, waiting to be asked to do something, to accept the responsibility for whatever, and we have not been asked to do anything as yet.
Is it that we are seen as ineffective or inefficient? Is our good-will in doubt?
Is our only purpose the holding of an occasional Reunion?
What really is our purpose, and are we achieving it?
Have we approached the Abbot and offered our services as a group in whatever way we can help?
Is the ASAA even effective again?
What's going on?
There has been no communication from any of the ASAA committee members for many months, and even my own messages to the Committee Members receive no response.
Am I in the boondocks? If so, why?
I believe that the ASAA is in an unique position to offer advice and much needed support to the Monastery at Mt. St. Benedict.
I believe that serious discussions should be held with Fr. Abbot, to offer our advice and assistance as he sees fit.
Unless these talks are held, the purpose of ASAA will remain merely to be a very specific social networking organization geared to organize the occasional back-clapping reunions, dinners, etc., but other than that, to have no other particular rationale for its existence.
My position: I am requesting a response from the ASAA Committee by November 30, 2009.
Failing this, I shall investigate privately and not as an Old Boy of MSB, how I personally might be of some help to the Abbot and the community.
With the greatest respect and good-will,
Nigel P. Boos

Don,
Being the 'Legal Mind' that you are, is there any possible way (as an Old Boy) that you can give advice or, propose some means for Abbot John to manoeuvre, navigate or circumvent around this magnanimous challenge that rides with such devastation upon their Spiritual shoulders.
I would like to hope that from all of us who roamed through the portals of this fabulous institution and blessed threshold of Spiritual development, can in some tangible way, and rally forth with some unified, productive options for His Lordship to consider.
I appeal to all the young/old boys, now mature, wise and willing adults to get together and, not just think about it, but do it.
As ever, with love and caring,
Art

Hi Nigel,
I hesitate to respond as I probably know less than any of the other correspondents.
The story I heard a couple of years ago at the first reunion in Trinidad was that the son of a cook at the Abbey School had taken possession of the New Refectory and had evicted the Monks.
He claimed squatter’s rights.
The Abbey did nothing to evict him.
They may, I gather, have now lost their right to do so.
He uses the building for his various businesses under the name of the Abbey School.
Something like that, nothing to do with us.

Dennis,
The May 22, 2009 letter from Abbot Pereira to you states, "I do not approve of the use of the name 'Abbey School' as part of the name for the proposed non-profit organization. I have taken this decision based on recent unfortunate circumstances in which the name(s) of the Abbey had been used with detrimental consequences."
This is quite shocking, indeed, and I would be very interested to know whether our Old Boys Association or any Old Boys in particular were responsible for this apparent abuse.
Would you be able to enlighten me on this matter?
Does it require an apology to the Abbot for whatever was done?
Are we going to leave the matter unanswered?
Is some restitution required or expected?
Surely, we can't leave this matter hanging out there unfinished!
I would appreciate some sort of response, if this is possible, please.
Thank you.

Thanks for this insight, Don.
For a while there, I wondered whether we were ourselves responsible for the abuse attached to the Abbey School name.
If what you say is correct, then I have to wonder at the lack of due diligence as exercised by the Monastery in monitoring the physical assets of their community, and I would have to suggest that if they hadn't been doing such monitoring at least on an annual basis, well, perhaps they should start now.
What a terrific shame. The guy who runs the place (is it the St. Benet's Hall, perhaps???) must have seen a loophole in the law and exercised his right as a squatter. But I also believe that actions may be taken by the Monastery at least once a year, with photographs, etc., to prove a point, where, for example, they might block the road for one day a year (or so I've been told) to assert their rights over it. If they don't do this, I've been told, they might eventually lose the right to cal the road a "private road" too.
They'd better watch it! And someone should inform the Abbot, if what I say is correct.
On another point, since we can't use the name "Abbey School", can we propose using just the word "Abbey" as in "Abbey Old Boys Association" - Perhaps Dennis can ask about this idea?

Sure, Arthur,
In fact, I send it out with every update to the database I'm trying to build.
The ASAA Committee is headed by Joe Berment, I believe, but others are also involved, so I'll copy this note to as many members as I know about, and Glen can click on each name (above) to get their email addresses.
I hope this helps, Glen.

ASAA Incorporation Progress.
From: Chris Knowles
Dear Ladislao,
Denis Gurley was in touch with Joe and me recently to let us know that the Registrar of Companies has approved the use of the name ‘Abbey School Alumni Association’ by our group.
Because of the length of time since we (you, Joe, Denis and I) signed the application it has become necessary for us to resubmit a newly signed application, and Denis has prepared such a document which I signed this morning, with Joe and Denis to sign shortly.
We have gone ahead without you as you are in Caracas and we are anxious to conclude this aspect of the birth of the Association.
It is permitted to use three signatories.
In order to acknowledge your input into our efforts we will be recognising your status at the meeting which we will hold after the Association is legally incorporated; this initial meeting is a normal part of the practical establishment of such legal entities.
We will keep you up to date as things progress.
(I am going to London tomorrow for about six weeks, so if things move speedily Joe or Denis will be in touch).
With best regards,
Chris.

Dear Friends,
The death of Theodore Guerra Jr. was announced by the media today.
If I remember clearly, he was the one of the two Guerra boys called "Fenebo".
He arrived at the Abbey School around 1972.
During his stay he was much disturbed and had difficulty in adjusting.
After school he had great difficulty and what appeared to be an off an on relationship with his dad.
I last saw him in 1995 when I was the manager at the ACE hardware store in Cocorite Trinidad.
He gave me a cell number which was soon out of order and never was able to keep touch as he had promised.
My heart goes out to this tormented soul whom some say took his own life.
I also feel for his father whom I suppose was equally tortured by their difficult relationship.
His dad (a former police man) became one of Trinidad and Tobago's leading criminal lawyers and is highly respected in his profession as a highly capable attorney at law.
If memory serves, he received the distinction of receiving silk.
It pains me that despite Theodore Srs., kindness and openness to me I had never felt that it was appropriate for me to intrude sufficiently enough to keep in touch with his son.
My pain and grief is for them both.
I believe that those of us whom knew the deceased at the Abbey School should make it our business to have a show of force at his funeral.
My several attempts to contact Mr. Guerra Sr. have been fruitless.
If any one can help me contact him please do.
Kindly pass this on to all whom are not on my list of contacts above.
Your Brother,
Joseph Berment-McDowald

Dear Ladislao,
Happy New Year
I am in receipt of the circulars and I am very grateful to you for sending them.
I have met Milliard" bullets' Howell several times while on the Judicial Bench in T&T.
Vernon "turf" de Lima has appeared in Court before me in a few matters.
I commend him for his honesty and integrity in and out of Court.
Vernon is a true friend. I keep in touch with him via the telephone.
Bullets has put on a bit of weight. I did challenge him to a 50 meter sprint, I think I can beat him because of his mid- age spread.
But, he asked for notice of two months to get his weight down and a bit of training.
I did not follow upanother cut-@*@* from the bullet may be too much.
It seems as though I may have to do quite a bit of travelling this year.
Apart from the trips to Hamburg for Court Sessions, I have to be at the UN in New York in June and November.
I have been invited to an International Conference in Beijing in May.
This will be interesting. I will have to visit the Olympic Stadium and fanaticize
Perhaps try out the track and purchase replicas of a gold medals, one for the Bullet one me and a silver for Vernon.
With kind regards,

Many thanks Nigel,
Seasons greetings to all.
On Boxing Day I visited the Abbey where I had a brief meeting with Fr. Cuthbert.
There are times when the full impact of reality "hits' you as it did as I walked around the old, yet familiar, paths.
There are just two monks who were there in my days.-
Fr. Cuthbert and Fr Augustine, who still looks like Richard Burton .
I said to myself with a smile Anthony you are "old".
Now there is another Justice Lucky in Trinidad, our second daughter Gillian.
So some lawyers, in my absence, refer to me as the old Justice Lucky.
I am still a judge of the International tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
The Headquarters and Court are in Hamburg
I pass through Amsterdam on the way to Hamburg to attend the Sessions.
Whenever we arrive there I reminisce and think of those who came to the Abbey from Holland.
I had been in contact with Fr. Paul and Fr. Francis before they passed on.
Fr. Ignatius is still alive.
We received a Christmas card from him last week.
With kind regards,
Anthony Lucky

Thanks for your email of April 15.
I have forwarded your email to Gregor.
Also, for any information on Dominica these are the following websites:
I will try to put together my happy and treasured memories of my years at the Mount.
That period was one of my happiest and memorable days where I became a much better student and keen sportsman.
Some of my best friends to this day, at age 76, are the wonderful friends I made while attending the Mount.
My only regret was that chemistry and physics were not taught at the time and my father always wanted me to become a chemical engineer.
I finally decided to follow my Dad’s wishes but must admit that these first two years were rough – especially chemistry.
Regards and best wishes. (seems you can extract 50 words)

Hi Salvador,
It has been a long time since I have had any contact with mount boys who went to school during the 6 years I spent in mount.
Actually I have had more contact with the older generation like Urbano v. Fedak who i know from the German church in Caracas.
Also his brother Mathias I see often when he goes to play tennis at the Caracas sports club were I am a member.
I am also in touch with Pedro Castro, his brother Reinaldo, who is now working in the German church and Donald Goddard, whom I know from the time I worked in the oil industry for ten years in Maraven.
I do remember you and your mother and the hotel where we always used to stay when we went to Cumana.
I think I have only gone back once more when i took my wife to see where we use to live in Tunapuy, pasando carupano where my father was a doctor.
Let me tell you a little bit about what I have been doing since I left mount (63-69) and provide some correct information since Andres Larsen did not get all the information correct.
I went to St. Marys university in Halifax, Canada, for one year, since my brother had gone there.
Then I followed my brother to memorial university in Newfoundland, Canada, where I obtained a bachelors degree in geology.
From there I returned to Venezuela and worked in the Ministerio de minas with Donald Goddard for about six months before i went back to Canada, Windsor, university in Windsor, Ontario.
There I did my masters degree in geology and my thesis was the study of the natural solar pond that exists in the island of grand Roque in the archipelago los Roques.
In Windsor I met my wife and once I finished I left for Gottingen, Germany, where I did a PhD in geochemistry.
I returned to Venezuela and worked one year in Intevep and nine years at Maraven.
In 1991, I left Maraven and went into the wholesale jewellery business where I continue to work.
Actually, I just came back today with my wife from New York, where we attended a jewellery show.
I have a house in boca raton and we come and go about once a month.
I have two boys, misha (23) and yuri (21), they are both in university in Canada.
Misha is at York in Toronto studying economics and Yuri is in Carleton University in Ottawa studying computer science.
Misha played professional tennis until last year but that did not go too good.
When he was 12 he spent two years at the niki pilic academy in Munich.
I will send you pictures of him with the current Australian open champion novak djokovich.
With regards to the Nazi name, that was the name given to my brother while in mount and once I got there they also called me nazi.
I think it had to do with my brother speaking German, I was not that fluent at that time.
Actually my mother is German and my father Ukrainian.
The Ronnie is what my mother still calls me but my real name is Myron, a common Ukrainian name.
I am returning to Venezuela on the 9th and I will send you some pictures of the family once I am there.
I am glad that all is going well with you and your family.
By the way, how is your mother doing? My regards to her.
If you ever come to Florida let me know, maybe I might be here and we can get together.
All the best
Myron

Hello Nigel,
"Nazi" is none other than Myron, also known as Ronnie, Lew.
He is married to a Canadian, they both are chemical engineers but he is in the precious gems business, also doing business in the Netherlands and Belgium.
He and his wife commute between Florida and Caracas.
They have two grown sons, both in college, and both, from what I understand, also majoring in chemical engineering.
Myron and his two sons are professional tennis players on the side.
In his younger days Myron and family would stay on vacations at the hotel that Salvador Coscarart's mother, Theresa, owned and ran in Cumana in eastern Venezuela.
Hope that clears things up a bit about "Nazi".
His e-mail address is mlew@cantv.net
Best regards

I never knew the poor guy's name, but I always called him "Nazi". Why? I don't even know.
But he was a great fellow, and in fact, I have a photograph of him, to share:
I thought his name was "Nascimento" or something like that?
So, do you remember him?
Regards,
Nigel

Hi Ladislao.
Sorry I could not make it for Csaba´s dinner last Thursday.
Anyway I had him and Maricarmen at home for lunch just a couple of days before.
Photo 57RB0002a2 in Circular 330 is Richard Chacon.
When I left Mount upon graduation in December 1958, he must have been finishing Form III or Form IV.
I don´t know where he was from, but he was a very close friend of Timothy Mew who was in my class.
Timothy is from BG but now lives in Australia.
Not long ago Timothy told me he had been trying to find Chacon for many years but unfortunately without success.
By the way, for quite some time all e-mails I have sent to Timothy Mew have been returned.
Do you have his new e-mail address? Thank you.
Best regards.

Have you got Skype?

Hello Ladislao Kertesz
Hi Ladislao, It was really nice to talk to you today and I will first send this info on Skype for you and then follow it up with an email with more details for all MSB members who may wish to talk to each other. This has all the necessary info for you so that at least you are ahead of the bunch. The message below is from Skype on their list. All the very best and will be in touch Tim & Gail & Family. Download Skype and make and receive free video and voice calls with other people on Skype like me. You can also make great value calls to landlines and mobiles, and send SMS messages.

Hi Ladislao,
Here is the web site for any MSB ex student to use if they wish to down load and use Skype to talk.
One has to select a Skype name for use, with mine being "timmewaussie".
This way one can search Skype for either a Skype name or via their emails, from there contact can be made one-way and the choice is up to the recipient to reply and share their details with you.
I chose to open an account with Skype via Visa for a small amount [say USD 20] with which I can call anyone on their normal phone landline.
When this falls below a certain $ value, I have elected for an automatic top-up of $20.00 again to keep a credit, but this choice is individual.
The costs vary from country to country, but are always rather inexpensive, eg. my phone call to Venezuela was only $0.04 per minute from Australia.
PC to PC is Free for both Skype users and broad band is better [than dial up] for reception and talking.
If your PC or Note Book has a video camera built in or a Camcorder attached you can see each other.
Or at least one of the two on the Computers if only one camera.
If I go to Skype on-line and wish to talk to a friend, who is not on-line with Skype, I usually call their Telephone and if at home they go on to the computer to talk free.
I transfer my call from the telephone to a new Sykpe call.
It can be a very nice way of keeping in touch with and directly talking to one's old class mates, rather than only use emails or faxes etc.
One can have a laugh, share a joke, answer questions directly, tell each other about families, or "getting old" and reminisce about past days together, whilst sharing the present.
I hope when you have the chance, you can publish this email and encourage other MSB 's to join Skype.
Also when you have the chance, please send me any telephone numbers from my 1958 class friends in Venezuela and also any MSB members in Australia, particularly Melbourne.
Cheers for now and I thoroughly enjoyed our talk and my "surprise" call to you.
Tim

Happy New Year.
May you and family have a truly wonderful 2010.
I have an idea which I would like to pass across you two guys first and then if accepted in principle, we may be able to take it further for broad approval.
I was thinking that for those MSB students who were interested, a ring featuring the Abbey School could be designed.
If worn everyone we met by purpose, accident or sheer co-incidence could recognize we were from various classes of Mt. St. Benedict.
Most universities have such a ring and if made of gold [14 ct] it could last a lifetime and be passed on to our children as a memento of our school days.
What do you think?
If it is too difficult in your opinion we could shelve it. However if and once we gained substantial acceptance from students, who would like to have and wear such a ring, we could then decide on the design and where to make it etc.
Some new thoughts for 2010 which may bring us closer together in a different way.
Ring in the New Year.
