Dear Friends,
News on Monastery and the unofficial story of the state and how it got there.
Unfortunately there is no official version, neither there seem to be plans to integrate old boys in the solution.

RE: Top of the Mount
...16 july 2010
From: Glen Mckoy
Thank you Nigel for this summary of events,
Let no one never say we did not try, and try we did, generations from now will read this in our Circulars, for that is all that will be left of our history, to think that only a few good men built such a great place, and now to see only a few small minded men, on a small island, let it go into ruin, all because of pity differences, pride and selfishness, may God have mercy on us all.
Do you think the Muslims would like this place to be a Mosque ??
Just a stupid question.
This is the highest church of the land, does it symbolize anything ??
this is bigger than you and I, believe me this is only the beginning, of what will happen to the flatlands, who once looked up to the mount for their blessings.
May God look over our remaining Fathers and the great lady Kitty, that still lives on the mount, for we certainly are not capable of doing even this.
I still remain upset about this situation; this is not a nice day,
Glen McKoy.

Indeed, the loss of St. Benet's Hall by the Monastery seems to have been due to lack of oversight by the authorities.
One must wonder whether the monks have been relying, over the years, on legal advice, and if so, how come this unfortunate occurrence has come about.
But be that as it may.
The point is that we as a group have approved the establishment of a small administrative office, whose purpose it is, as I understand it, quite manifold, including the responsibility to keep us apprised of developments relative to MSB, offering to assist Fr. Abbot in any way in which he might request our help, seeking input from the Old Boys as to suggested actions we might undertake, and so on. . . .
But definitely, for the past year, at least, I do not recall seeing any newsletter, any advisory, any notification, any suggestion, anything at all emanating from the Administration.
There had been plans, I know, in the early days, when enthusiasm was high, and discussions were held between Fr. Abbot and some of the Old Boys, as I recorded in an email dated September 24, 2007 to Fr.Cuthbert:
"I have just received a note from Manuel Prada indicating that some sort of discussions have taken place between Fr. Abbot and a number of the MSB Old Boys with regard to the Sports Complex at the Mount.
I must confess that I really do not get much information from the various attached notes, and I am wondering whether I could request a report by email from whoever at the Monastery is handling this matter, as to the plans for the various buildings , lands, Sports Complex, etc. which all form part of the Monastery's holdings.
"The Abbey School holds many wonderful memories for all of us who were privileged to pass through its halls, and we must now consider that we were indeed blessed by the very fact of our isolation and togetherness, as these have hardened us and brought us together as a group, even though many years have passed since we walked on those grounds and played on those fields. . . . .  now, we see that the day has arrived when the very Monastery where, individually, we received the greatest spiritual gifts that any boy could desire, is soon to close its doors.
What is to happen to the buildings?
What to the lands, the playing fields, the swimming pool, the tennis courts, the Visitor's House, the Rest House, the Abbey School itself, St. Benet's Hall, the entire Complex?
Surely, there must be a plan somewhere!
"Is it possible that among the many of us who were fortunate to attend classes at the Abbey School, there might be one or two who are in a position, as Lawyers, as Surveyors, as Real Estate Agents, as Politicians, as friends, who could come to the aid of the old place and offer some advice and help?"

On September 25, 2007, I wrote to Howard Ho:
Far be it from me to tell the good monks what to do with their property.
I've not given much thought to this myself, but it would seem to me that they must have foreseen the day coming when this could happen, and if so, their contingency plans should be put into place.
I am simply wondering what their plans are for the huge holdings at the Mount, and if they would be so good as to share the info with us, perhaps some of us might be in a position to advise / assist.
Seems to me, at the outset, that an Advisory Council / Committee made up of Fr. Abbott, his legal counsel, one or two trusted members of the T'dad community and perhaps some of us Old Boys could be set up to examine the question and to make recommendations.
But maybe they've already done all of this - I just don't know.
---------------------------------
On September 25, 2007 also, Jon Golding had written
I am not sure what this is all about but if reading between the lines we understand that they want to sell off the field to raise cash perhaps we could all be informed about the situation, as Nigel has put it so well below, and find an in-house solution.
Some of us have on several occasions told the Abbot and Fr Cuthbert (and even Bro Vincent the night we saw Manuel in TT last year) that the old boys collectively have the resources (mental as well as financial) AND the motivation - to build a retirement retreat for us and our families - somewhere in the vast acreage - which would create a real community with considerable pedigree and support for the objectives of the Abbot and monks.
Can we know more about all this please?

On September 25, 2007, Manuel Prada also contributed
I believe that this confusion has arisen after having read Kertez´s Mount circular.
I think it´s #30. Please check it out.
The person in charge of a leasing and reconstruction of Mount´s sports complex is Bro. Rupert.
I know of this because he comes often to Venezuela and we have a close friendly relation, including Isaias.
Rupert is a very close friend of the Tangs, my Trinidadian famly.
The monks don´t want to sell or anything of the sort.
I understand the complex could be revamped and it would be of great service to the community as a whole and to the Abbey, specifically, as an important source of money.
This is what it is all about.
Please contact Br. Rupert or the Abbot.
Pud was just a very important and fortunate contact with the government authorities after Rupert made the comment to him and Rupert being sort of despaired for the government not having answered after having they made an offer in the sense that I have mentioned.
This last august was in TT for a very short visit: a Tang´s wedding and a meeting with dear fat Pud.
I don´t have his new  email but he can easily be reached in TT.Hope this note  clarifies things. Do contact Rupert or his excellency the Abbot for further actual details. . Regards and promise to see you on my next visit.

Gosh ! ... I am soooooooo proud of you all.  I really do not know what is going exactly regarding the preservation of Mount's lands, but it makes me feel so proud to see how you guys take care of the most beautiful memories of My life.  And then I notice that perhaps they are also Yours !!! I was thrilled and sad at the same time to see the latest pictures of the football field, I so much enjoyed, seemingly abandoned.  And the pool, the showers.  It brought so many memories.
GOD bless you all.
My Brothers ......................................... The Mount Boys !
You make feel privileged and proud !

On October 19, 2007, Winston Ramsahai explained:
The Monastery - in particular, Fr Abbot does not want the Abbey's problems published and comments on the circular, hence my reason for reaching out to you.
The concerns are :
1- About 10 yrs ago The Monastery allowed a person to upgrade and use Benet Hall and its facilities including the prep rooms and now the individual do not want to sign a lease or pay an increased rent, the laws in TT, permit an occupier of premises to claim ownership of property after 16 yrs if you do not have a proper lease agreement in place.
The guy is looking in that direction.
Rent to Abbey is under TT$ 1,000,00 per month, and the charges TT$5,000,00 per day for the dining room use.
The matter is now in the hands of JD Sellier & Co.
The Abbot was verbally abused at the Hall during a function and the monks refrain from going up there...sad
2- Similar scenario at PAX Guest House exists, here is a not bad as Bennet Hall, because the wife of the local guy operating PAX is Fr Augustine's niece, and quite frankly they will be seeking compensation for building PAX Guest House "name/goodwill"  before leaving.
The Abbot's plan is to address PAX after Bennet Hall is resolved.
3- Several Old boys approached the monks over the years with grand plans, and nothing materialized, most were self motivated and not planned properly.
Now that the major issues (have been) downloaded,
The Abbey needs us more the ever before, Fr Cuthbert spoke the words into my life a few month ago, " Why don't I start doing something about ASOBA " .... quite honestly, I pretended I did not hear him.
--------------------------------
I know that there had been talk about establishing a museum, for example, where we could all submit our odd stuff from the MSB days for the interest of visitors; we had discussed having a Sports Day at the Playing Field, and so on . . . .
But to this day, there has been no further word on these interesting plans.
Where is the interest, guys? Where the motivation? Where's the leadership?
What's going on?

Don ... what a GREAT reflection ... what an incredible opportunity to exercise some philosophy !!!
Well .... The Christ has the best answer to your question
"Do not judge so that you are not judged"
So ... We cannot judge people ... however ... we CAN judge VALUES. Behaviours. That process ('axiological knowledge' - conocimiento axiologico) is what makes us choose between good and evil ... But we are not entitled to set a judgement - or even less condemn - anyone.  That is not even Christian. [Of course, prudent exemption must be made of the judgement of men on men with regards to imposing the laws that rule relationships between men or between them and the public power... Jesus also said "Give to GOD what 'belongs to GOD' and to Cesar what 'belongs' to Cesar".]
And .... regarding then what is 'good' or 'evil' ... the answeer is found within one's spirit inspired in the "natural order of things" ... ("sindéresis") ... inspired in the eternal truths ...
And even after "he"... "the man" is dead ....it is HIM ... GOD !  ... who judges .. not us ... and the judgement is imposed through LOVE.
How much we have loved ? ... well .... the answer to that question will condition "the  judgement" under GOD.  Have we loved GOD and our neighbours as ourselves ?
.... or .... in said in other words that I have heard over the year from some good friends "...  and in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make."  (The Beatles) ...
There ...
Regards ....

RE: chill out, Father's Day‏

I have been restraining myself from entering this but here we go, all my educated mount brothers,
The only this worst that an extremist is another extremist, regardless if they are Christian, Muslim  or whatever.
Fellas opinions are like assholes everyone has one.
Now to a more positive vibe.
This father's day I spent it with two very special comrades YES, they were Olde Boys.
This was one of the best father's day that I have been fortunate to have experienced.
Here I was in Central California visiting my son when I got a phone call from one of our fellow Mount brother, Jerry Krishna Toolsie.
Jerry suggested that with me on the West Coast it would be great that our families link.
He then told me that Hudson Mckoy was on the West Coast also and he wanted to do the same.
Man... Hudson, I have not seen Hudson in thirty five years and it had been a couple of years since I last saw Krishna and his wonderful family.
So it was on. Krishna selected a wonderful Resort Spa with a fabulous restaurant and we decided to meet at 3:pm.
Here Krishna was driving about 75 miles North, Hudson was driving about 90-100 miles South and I was driving about 210 miles south to the rendezvous point.
My fellow olde boys I got there one time and we limed and hung out until about 8:pm that evening.
What impressed me the most is our families had never met before and my wife and daughter were interacting with Krishna’s and Hudson's family like they all attended the Mount with us.
Gentlemen that was like the best father's day present I ever received.
We sat and talked for hours and during those hours of conversation the Mount was not the focus.
I was so happy to hear my brothers Hudson and Krishna relate to their negative experiences at the Mount as great life learning experiences and have since utilized those negative experiences to grow and teach friend and family that when life gives you a lemon don't pucker your lips but rather make lemonade and market it with a smile.
Gentlemen Hudson's son Jeno has an exceptional gift, I listened to his demo CD and it was outstanding, if any of my fellow Mount Olde Boys may know or know someone who knows any producer or folks in the music business I truly ask that you contact Hudson and give this CD an ear.
On another note there is a 400 yr anniversary of some sought coming up for MSB.
I would really like for the olde boys to get together and render some labor force by assisting with an environmental clean up of some of the facilities up at the mount for this anniversary.
Please give some feedback.
I can really see the olde boys spending a Saturday and a Sunday volunteering cleaning up the facilities with food and drinks provided we can break out the weed eaters ,power washers paint brushes and really provide a face lift for the Mount.
Once we have completed our goal we can really put down a nice beach lime.
Positive and Negative feed back welcome.
PEACE.
Skippy.

Tony,
I've got your message and implemented the changes you requested.
How interesting, that you should be leaving Guyana at this time.
I had thought that perhaps Pres. Jagdeo was getting things under control, but I may have misunderstood.
Are you therefore now, making Miami your permanent home?
If you'd care to share your telephone number with me, I could alert other OB's from MSB who live in the area and let them know of your address change.
Re. Roland Da Silva, I must admit I’ve never heard of him until now.
I'd be most interested to get all the dope on him and his (what's his name?) brother.
Thank you for your kind input, and good luck in Miami
Finally, as you have requested, I'm relaying your info vis this email to other members of the Guyanese OB fraternity of which I'm aware.
Nigel
P.S. To all you ex-Guyanese folks - I'm trying to contact Marcel Gomes (Class of '58), who, perhaps, lives in Toronto, but I'm assured, does live somewhere in Canada. Can anyone help me to locate him? Thanks.  NB

The PNCR yesterday said MP Anthony Vieira has resigned from the National Assembly.
Anthony Vieira
In a press release the party said Vieira’s resignation became effective on January 1.
It also extended gratitude to Vieira for his services to Guyana and the PNCR.
Vieira last year migrated to the United States and sold his TV station business to the Ramroop Group.
The demise of Vieira Communications Ltd began when the lottery company moved the nightly draw from VCT to NCN
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Dear Editor,
It is time to set the record straight regarding my retreat from Guyana.
When I first sold VCT I was embroiled in several court cases and negotiations regarding such matters as property taxes and outstanding income taxes which constrained me from speaking for fear of further victimization.
At the time I told the public that I was retiring and that I was disposing of my assets since I wanted to lead a less stressful life.
Nothing could have been further from the truth.
I loved being a broadcaster in Guyana and I liked (not loved) being in Parliament; it’s boring!
There is one inaccuracy in your report about my resignation from Parliament.
I have not migrated; I am for the time being in the US (although it could very well be the Bahamas), but I do not have a green card so I am essentially here as a visitor and I have been back to Guyana three times since June.
I am a Guyanese and a Vieira, and that makes me a substantial shareholder in real estate at Houston and I do still own a house at Versailles where my son Anthony lives, and I have acquired a house lot at Houston from my family where at some time I hope to build a house.
Yours faithfully,
Anthony Vieira

Dear Friends,

Now to the tales of the Circle of Golden Rings / Tales from the Knights.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From: Nigel P. Boos
Hi there, Cornel.
Based on your last message, I believe you'd like to see the attached:
By the way, "Bandit's" real name is David de Castro. He lives in Miami.
Here's some "stuff" he'd written about himself a long time ago
I believe that when I went to Mount St. Benedict the school was just one year old.
Here are some of the stories from those early years.
In those days the schools was divided into two sections – Big Boys and Little Boys.
The big boys would rough up and tap up the little boys until they realized with me that I liked to pelt stones so after a few stones in their back side they didn’t bother me any more.
However, they made myself and John Maingot (the second youngest boy) fight every week.
The big boys would tell John that I said that I was going ‘to cut his ass’ and they would tell me that John said that he was going to ‘cut my ass’.
So it was standard procedure for myself and John to fight every week.
As I remember it, I won some and I lost some.
In those days Father Ildefons was the Head Master.
One day he took off his collar and the boys formed a boxing ring and he had a fist fight (no gloves) with one of the Darwin boys.
As Father Ildefons threw a right hand, Darwin blocked it with his arm and Father Ildefons broke his own hand.
That was the end of the fight.
Colin Phillip’s and I also had a big fight on the cricket grounds.
We became best of friends after that and we are still very good friends today.
I speak to him often.
Memories:-
In 1945 when World War II was over (VJ Day) the priests made all the boys paint a ‘V’ for Victory sign, with white wash over the entire mountain, starting from Marsden Pool.
It stretched for about 5 miles.
Somewhere around 1948, Macauly, my brother Delano, DeSantos and Michael Boyack and myself, founded the Bar Bell Boys and had a den in the bush.
With permission from Father Ildefonse I formed a steelband side called The Mount Mariners.
It included not only the Bar Bell Boys but also Stanley Ferguson, Colin Phillips and Michel Nassief and some others.
We were to have our first ‘pan around the neck’ parade for the carnival that year.
Donald Boyd, Colin Phillips, Michele Nassief and Myself, got one of the day students from the village to buy us a bottle of rum.
We got the bottle and the four of us took it to the den, drank it, chased with water and we all got thoroughly drunk and puked and fell down in the bushes.
The next day we ended up in the infirmary with our so-called Doctor, Brother Michael telling him we had stomach problems.
He never realized we were just sick drunks with a hangover.
We revived in time for the carnival and we performed for the school and they all enjoyed a jump up around the school grounds.
We also played for concerts at Mount St. Benedict.
The Last Term
The night before we were to leave the Mount for the ending of the school year, myself and Philip Nassief decided to put shoe polish and toothpaste on the boy’s faces and hair while they were asleep.
In all the commotion and laughing Father Ildefonse found out about it and beat the shit out of Michel and I in the morning while we were still in our pajamas (6 strokes each with a cane)
What a going away present.
That was the year 1953 when I graduated from Senior Cambridge and left Mount St. Benedict.
My first job was at Alstons in Port of Spain.
Reminiscing as I write I remember Father Leesingh, ( the dean at that time) beating me every week until he got fed up and told me to get out of the line as he was tired beating me.
Myself and Father Leesingh also played as a pair, pitching the biggest marble games in the history of the school.
Some pots in the rings were 1000 marbles.
I pitched with an iron slug and got the nickname ‘Dougles’ because an iron slug was called a dougle.
After Graduation I worked in Trinidad for one year, flying all over the place on my motor cycle, the flying tiger.
I then left for Canada in the year 1955.
I formed a Calypso Band called the Fabulous Calypso Bandits and I was known as ‘The Bandit’.
We traveled all through the United States and Canada for 12 years. (I will be mailing you  my latest compositions on my latest CD)
At present I am married to a lovely lady from Trinidad who was formerly a de Montbrun.
I have 6 children and 10 grand children and live in a nice home with a pool and life is wonderful.
I thank God that I was fortunate to go to Mount St. Benedict and get a great education.
I loved every minute of it, including the discipline and the beatings.
Yours Sincerely
Dave De Castro

Hello "Mr." Bandit!  (Just so you know I copied Glen on this.)
I do not know your real name, nor do I know which years you spent at The Abbey School, Mount St. Benedict, Tunapuna, Trinidad ....
But, what I do know is, that you are one of my Brothers! ... and that's all that matters.
So, whenever you feel up to it, drop me a 'little tale' of your time at that now famous castle in the sky that Our Dear 'little'  brother Glen writes so "Eloquently" about, he is good!!! ....and I believe everything he writes about.
And, yes, I agree wholeheartedly with you, that (I wish) more of us would encourage him to write a book!
Mount St. Benedict, although at the time I did not realize it, was a wonderful place and it (The Mount) and all the memories I have of it will live in my heart forever, especially the really great group of brothers I had the privilege and even honour to grow up with!
Until I received an email from Ladislao Kertesz some time ago saying:"Cornel, thank GOD we've found you." .. I felt there was a part of my life missing, like an emptiness.
(By the way are you a born Trinidadian? ...and do you still live there?)
I remember when I first came to Canada, I was having a conversation with some people, and among them were some Trinidadians, and when asked where I went to school and I told them that I attended The Abbey School Mount St. Benedict, do you know what they told me?
"Oh, you went to the school of the 'Elite'."
I did not understand what exactly they were speaking about, but you want to know something?
They were correct!  --- we were ALL of us "A Special Group Of Young Men" and specially blessed for the opportunity to attend in that Castle in the Sky, that our younger brother Glen writes about so beautifully. (Thank you Glen)
You nurture such beautiful memories and often touch our hearts.)
A little known fact, I was attending school at the Mount when the Union Jack was taken down and Trinidad's Tricolours was raised for the first time all over the nation, and also when 'Fidel Castro' made an impromptu visit to the Mount.
The night before many of the boys were staring out of the window in the annex dormitory (Where there were all bunk beds) and saw his motorcade as a very long snake of lights leaving Piarco Airport coming across the flatlands.
He thought Mount St. Benedict was a fortress! and as I understand,  demanded' to visit it.
Take care,
GOD's Blessings on you and your loved ones.

Today's Tales, our new knights, are secrets, spoken only here, in this Bunker, in Mt.Tabor.
It is written, that a messenger from the voice of one, whispered into the ears, of a chosen few.
Since the year 1942, plus another 42, you must send your sons to the mount.
This is a great sacrifice, you must make, and some hate you must take, but in the end, decades and decades, from now, your sons will sit, in the realm of the Knights, in the power of one, only then will they understand, their fathers wisdom, when they enter a world, of a golden time, hidden in the mountains, of this emerald forest, that surrounds us.
Right here, right now on Mt.Tabor.  Cheers!! Long Live the" Knights of White Stones", Yeah!! All for one, and one for ?? The Mount!!
My story today, from the book, the"King of Hearts" The night that "White Stones", glowed.
On a warm April evening, around 7:45 p.m. in 1958. Some boys said they saw, a UFO, hovering above WhiteStones".
Like the craft was looking for something, on top of the mountain,(Tabor) it came down so low, that the Stones, started to glow, and sparks started to fly, the craft pulled back up, stood for a minute and a half, and then shot up into the sky, and disappeared.
All the Knights remained silent that night, the head knight on the mount at the time, decided in the morning, to call and inform, an outside, older knight of the Club.
No more sightings, were recorded, that year
New Knights, the Jungle is always alive, with so many creatures, slowly moving, or sitting and waiting.
The Knights like the animals, synchronize their senses, by spending long hours, learning how to focus, by slowly observing, their emerald surroundings.
By closing their eyes, everything could be heard, in the wind, the jungle gently speaks to you.
With open eyes, you should see, the eyes that are also looking at you, if you seek you will See, like the Eagles we feed.
Always moving with the spirit, made them strong and brave, as they ventured deep into the forest.
As I leave, the only thing I will take, are our secret tales & stories, forever in my heart I will keep.
A few months later, this Knight was leaving on a jet plane, and no one ever heard from him again.
Short stories from the Tales, as the years went on.
Those days you taught would never end, has only just begun.
From a bunker, somewhere in the mountains of Tabor.
The emerald forest is always alive.
Thank you again for your time, my fellow Brother-Knights, big hello to my brothers in Hurricane Zone, to the rest of my brothers, have a sunny day,
Take care, and Smile, O.K.

From: Glen Mckoy
Welcome to the Club the above names, have found their way back, within the past year, since they also left the mount, many live in different countries, and did not have any contact, and by some one in a million chance, a contact is made, too many impossible stories, for me to tell, of how and why these Knights are drawn to the Mount
This is just one of tales, you have missed while you were away, please check the circular, where it is all written.
Cheers!!  Glen.
