Thanks, Janice.
Arthur had been looking for Denis, and I felt that one of you Stodart girls would have the answer he was looking for.
Thanks for your kind help.
So, Carnival is over, or will be soon, and we're into Lent.
God bless you and yours.

P.S. Where is Pat living now? I don't recognize her "Deacon" name.

Hello, Brian,

Well.... It's been a long time since we started the search for all you Old Boys, and slowly, one by one, you're coming out of the dark.
I' so glad that you did - and thank you ever so much for the wonderful photographs.
You have brought back lovely memories of those days of long ago.
One of the efforts we're making is to develop a spreadsheet "database" of all the Past Students of MSB, and there seems to be a lot of enthusiasm behind the project.
So many of the guys have come forward with memories, photographs, stories, tall tales, jokes, and lies too (possibly), and we're having a lot of fun with this and other projects.
As you may know, Arthur Knaggs had started a newsletter many years ago, called OASIS, ("Overseas Abbey Students in Suspense" or something like that).
Well, the years have gone by, and OASIS gradually drew to a close.
But Ladislao Kertesz (Class of 1960) in Venezuela was inspired about 6 years ago to take up the baton and, without knowing of Arthur's prior efforts, began again, through the use of emails, to round up support for a renewed effort to bring us ancients back together again.
So, you're in good company, and on behalf of us all, I welcome you to the group.
Another effort we're making is to develop a scrapbook of combined memories of all of us old guys, and I'll attach the current version for your enjoyment.
It's a work in progress, and we're looking out for great stories, etc. to embellish the final product.

I came across the Mount St Benedict website (by chance whilst I was looking up another matter concerning Trinidad) and I was intrigued to note all the information from 'old boys', including comments from Trevor Evelyn, a fellow 'mud head' like myself from British Guiana (now Guyana).
I was even more surprised when a copy of your email of 17/04/08 to Goddard Christian appeared in my inbox two days ago (how it found my email is a mystery but I was most interested to read it) and I am taking the liberty of emailing you direct with news of some really 'old old boys' at MSB, including a select number of "Boys from BG" who arrived at Mount St Benedict 1945.
For information purposes, I am copying this email to Clive Bettencourt-Gomes who was also a pupil at MSB.
The 'Boys from BG' of my generation were:
Clive Bettencourt-Gomes, Tony Gomes, my cousin Terrence Gonsalves, my brother and I (Bunny & Brian Gonsalves), Kit Nascimento (I didn't have his name recorded before this) and the Willems brothers (Anthony & Johnny) - there may well have been a few others but, after 63 years, my memory has failed to remember them.
I am attaching 3 old photographs from our time at MSB which shows several of the BG Boys together with the two Farfan brothers (John & David) from Trinidad whose lovely parents practically 'adopted' us whilst we were at MSB. (Lovely pictures - thanks.)
Even after over six decades, I still have many vivid and happy memories of my one brief year at MSB - three unforgetable yet different images come to mind ... the first was in May 1945 VE Day, when virtually all the pupils (plus a few monks) led by Fr. Ildefons trooped up to the top of Mount Tabor (behind the School) with equipment to 'Dig out & Whitewash' a very large Cross of Peace (PAX) to celebrate the end of the War in Europe.
The Cross was clearly visible for miles and it became something of a landmark for the area. (This must have really been something, because Arthus Knaggs, David Da Costa, Terry Evelyn and now you too, have given me this great story.)
The second was of a sublime holiday in Tobago when the BG boys (who didn’t return to Guiana) were takem by the Monks (Fr Bernard & Brother Anthony) to spend Easter at the Murrays' Coco Plantation at Roxborough (I believe Brother Anthony was related to the Murray family?).
Besides riding horses and exploring the plantation, there was a major incident one day at Roxborough Bay when a sizeable shark appeared near where several of us were swimming ...  we all managed to splash out safely, especially Anthony Willems and my cousin Terrence who were the two boys nearest the shark.
However, by the time we returned to school after the holiday to tell the tale, the size of the shark became considerably larger ("enormous man-eater") and the distance to the swimmers became considerably nearer ("a few feet away")!
The third (more mundane recollection) was when one of the Knaggs brothers (Arthur I think?) captured a seriously large snake which he brought back to the school.
The snake was allowed to 'slither' around the courtyard for all the boys to see before officialdom intervened and it was eventually despatched as humanely as possible.
Several of the BG Boys left Trinidad and MSB in 1946 to continue their education in England with the Jesuits - Clive Bettencourt-Gomes, Kit Nascimento and the Willems brothers to Stonyhurst College in Lancastshire and the two Farfan brothers plus all the Gonsalves to Mount St Mary's College in Derbyshire ...
A final note about the 10 individuals in the 1945 photographs - sadly four have died (my brother Bunny, the two Farfans John (I'm glad you confirmed his death, because, to this point, I had his passing as 'Unconfirmed') & David and Anthony Willems) and, of the remaining six, Clive B-G resides in Spain, Terrence Gonsalves and Trevor Evelyn lives in Canada, John Willems and (I think Kit Nascimento?) are in Guyana (new info for us) and I live near the River Thames in Oxfordshire.
Cordial saluto,
Brian

Interesting. Here's the photograph again (I hope this is the one to which you were referring), for your further review. Now, Ken Austin has already identified the boys here as follows:
Brian, I am trying to get an email address for your cousin Terence, who, I understand, is married to Tommy Jardim's sister, Joan.
I know, from previous correspondence, that Terence lives somewhere in Ontario, and it would be nice to be able to talk to him.
We are, in fact, holding a "Roti Night" on June 6th, and I'd like to invite him to join us, so if either you or Tommy can help me to find his email address of even a telephone number, I'd appreciate it.

As regards the first Scouts photo, I'm relieved that someone else has spotted John Farfan - and, although I do not recall being in the Scouts at MSB, I did 'think' that I might be boy in the Front Row Right of the photograph?
Unfotunately, I have already cleared yesterday's emails, so am unable to have another close scrutiny.
Thank you for your follow-up email with the 1948 School photograph; I agree that John Farfan is number '62' but I am unable to locate his brother David ... the only other face that  I think I recognise is No.'11' who might be Trevor Evelyn?
I shall keep 'looking' but I'm afraid that 60 years of living around the World has dulled my memories of those halcyon days at MSB.
My brother (Bernard) cousin (Terence) and I departed from MSB to England in 1947, so we are definitely not in the School Photograph.

Thanks for your input, Brian.
By the way, are you in this picture as well?
Ken Austin had earlier today suggested that #62 was John Farfan. So, what do you guys think?
Trevor, any input? I know you're working on an additional list, but perhaps this might help.
Ken's and Trevor's other identifications are set out below, and I'm going with these unless and until someone challenges.

Dear Brian,
Thank you for your impressive summary of your "Life After Mount". Well . . . . you've certainly done your bit, as they say, and seen the world.
And it all adds up, I guess, in ways large and small, to eventually make this place a little better than it had been before we arrived. Well done.
Thank you, too, for Terrence's email address.
I shall send him an introduction note today.
By the way, I notice that you have spelt SYMPATICO with an "I" rather than a "Y" and I'm not sure of either.
I say this because many people in Ontario use the SYMPATICO / SIMPATICO service and therefore I'll try both to se which one works.
I appreciate the help.
Re. your pictorial effort. I'd really like to see these pictures, but unfortunately, they didn't arrive with your note.
The script did come through, but not the pictures.
Would you mind sending them again, please?
In case you're having any difficulty with them, I can try talking you through the process - if you'd like.
Best wishes.

Further to our recent exchange of emails, I am enclosing a short pictorial summary covering the past 64 years from Trinidad in 1946 (when I left MSB) to my business career overseas from 1956-86 and eventually to England from 1986-2009.
After leaving College in 1954, I was employed by the British-American Tobacco Group and following an initial 9-months induction course as a Management Trainee, I was transferred to work in overseas territories, starting in Nigeria (1956-62), Jamaica (1963-66), Kenya/Tanzania (1966-68), UK/Europe (1968-70) and then Zambia (1970-71).
I changed career in 1971 when I joined the Beecham International Group in the UK (1971-73) before being transferred to senor management appointments in Beecham in South Africa (1973-80) and then as a Director of Beecham of Kenya Ltd (1980-86).
I returned to the UK in 1986 and made another Career change to work in the Financial/Investment Business with Hill Samuel Merchant Bank (1986-95) and later Zurich Financial Services from 1995 until I retired in 2006.
I now relax at home in Oxfordshire with my wife, spoil our three grandchildren, play some golf and take at least one holiday break per year in the sun (mainly in the Caribbean or in South Africa).
Kind regards and keep up the good work on behalf of the old MSB students ...
I remember you did ask me to let you have the email address of my cousin, Terence Gonsalves, and (better late than never) it is : terrybarbs@simpatico.ca

Thank you for your generous donation of US $200 towards our Dalmatic Fund.
This has put us over the top and I can now pay our bill in full.
I appreciate your help, because without it and the help of so many other Old Boys we could not have raised the money we needed.
May God bless you and yours during this Lenten season.

Thank you for your very kind offer of help.
This is just wonderful.
Please send your cheque directly to me at the address below.
We have established an account at Royal Bank of Canada, with Hudson McKoy and myself as signatories, and payment of the outstanding balance will be made from this account.
Therefore, if you send your cheque to Lionel, he will still have to send it to me here in Canada.
Once again, thank you.

Hello/Hola to all
My dear brother Trevor,  (cc.CheChe)
Thank you, so much, for such details, from the Abbey school past, we, the ones, who came, many years after, are always intrigued by your stories.
I still go back, to past articles you have written, in the Circular.
You are definitely, one of our best historians, and a true Knight, a source of knowledge.
We must all thank you, for your time,  in preparing, such a precious contribution, for all of us here, to share.
I am including you, on my personal list, of Old Mount Boys, I pay a lot of respect to, and would like to send you an email or two, once in awhile, if you don't mind.
Also, I do hope our brother (CheChe) Rafael Echeverria, makes contact with you, as he is working on the Chronicles of the Abbey School Old Boys Private Club.

Trevor,
That sounds like a great idea, with every donation you get a book.
We have to be able to make contact with the Abbot.
I think Peter is in the process of doing so.
After the results of this, hopefully we can make a good order of books, I want a book also.
We are still at ground zero organizational level, but its coming together.
Best regards my brothers, God Bless.

I have just received the Book which I ordered from Father Cuthbert by Email.
The cost of the book is $80.oo TTdollars and postage was $15.00  TT sent by regular mail that took 3 weeks to get here.
The book is very informative and brought back lots of memories.
I think it would be a good idea for most of us to send what we can afford over and above the cost of the book the remaining for the use of the Monastery this is only a small way of helping them without any embarrassment.

Invitations to Kitty Marcus and Iris Wilson

I guess, then, that I have been incorrectly informed.
But no problem - that's why we communicate, isn't it?
If the whole world would learn to communicate, I maintain, we could solve every problem that exists.
Anyway, to business - Maria, please note the comments from another Past Student of the Abbey School, and adjust your letter of invitation and any adjunct notes accordingly.
With very best wishes to you both.

Dear Maria,
I understand from Deacon Lionel Roberts that you'd like to have the full names of Kitty Marcus and Matron Wilson, both of whom served us well during our time as students at the Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Kitty as a Science Teacher and Matron Wilson as the care-giver at our Infirmary.
I now wish to provide you with the information you requested. here are the names and addresses:
1. Katherina Kitty Marcus, St. Peter's Home, Mt. St. Benedict, St. Augustine, Tunapuna, Trinidad
2. Ms. Iris Wilson, Upper St. John's Rd., St. Augustine, Tunapuna, Trinidad
We, the Old Boys of the Abbey School, would appreciate if a formal invitation could be sent from the Archbishop's Office to these two old ladies, to attend at the February 6th 2010 ordination ceremony of 24 Permanent Deacons in Trinidad, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. We are presenting a gift of a dalmatic to each of the new Deacons, in honour of Kitty Marcus and of the Past Students of the Abbey School, and small memorial tags have been sewn into the inside of each dalmatic, bearing this information.
Kitty Marcus is now 91 years of age and is, I understand, too feeble to attend the ceremony. In fact, she is suffering from a medical condition which would prevent her presence at the Cathedral, and furthermore, I have been told that she would be a serious distraction to the congregation. Therefore, although the invitation should be sent, I seriously doubt that she will / should attend.
Mrs. Wilson, on the other hand, will be able to attend, but she will need help in getting to the Cathedral. I understand that her son, Salah Wilson, a resident of Montreal, Canada, and an Old Boy of the Abbey School will be present in Trinidad, and he has indicated that he intends to attend the ceremony himself. It is reasonable to expect that he should be able to accompany his mother to the Cathedral, so, if Kitty Marcus does not attend, perhaps Mr. Wilson might be able to sit alongside his mother in the space that would have been occupied by Kitty Marcus. In such a case, it would be helpful if two seats can be reserved for Mr. & Mrs. Wilson. I have no idea whether Salah's wife is accompanying him on his current visit to Trinidad, but if she is, I am certain that she would also wish to attend the ceremony at the Cathedral.
Thank you very much for your kind help in this matter.
With very best wishes.
Nigel P. Boos
P.S. For your information, Ms. Charlotte Julien is the Director of St. Peter's Home, where Kitty Marcus lives. Charlotte may be contacted at (office) 868-662-6218 or (home) 868-645-3595 or (cell) 868-332-6630, should you wish to discuss Kitty's condition at all.

Hey Attila !
How are you !
I have seen and enjoyed your emails over the months and looking at Ladislao's frequent News Letters.
Have some fantastic stories about your time in Mount and now I am learning that you were in Mount since 1964 !!! ... to 1969 ...
I was at Mount from 64 to 67 ... so it is only logical that we must have coincided.
I read once an anecdote you wrote about Enrique Gomez.
Enrique was a great and close friend.
We played in a rock band together called Chains, do you recall that?
Norman Smith (second guitar) and my brother Gustavo (lead guitar) were also in the band, I played the bass.
In spite of all those stories I confess that I do not remember you and I am sure - I am positive - that we must have coincided at some point in time.
I look forward to finding moments in which we may have coincided so that light comes to my mind and say "AJA !!!! ... Yes ! ... That is Attila !!!!"
I know through your mails that you seem to have developed your life as a pilot (please correct me if I am wrong !) and that you had an incredible experience world wide and that you now live here in Florida, USA.
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you require any assistance.
You are my Mount Boy school mate and that has a lot of value.
I have been - for four months now - writing about Mount Boy's Chronicles which is a project I have invested time, effort and care.
I know you would be an incredible source of some good stories.
I believe I have a story about you actually "operating" and sewing some one's foot after some serious injury which you assisted and saved your school mate.
So I am getting an image of you being some sort of Mount Boy Rambo !!!! JAJAJAJAJA!!!
Did you perhaps alternate more with my brothers? Gustavo, Leo or Xavier?
Perhaps I was on "higher" years and that's why I don't recall your friendship.
In any case, I am happy to know about you and your experiences and I look forward to meeting with you in the future and share our Mount Boy's stories !
Siempre Amigo !

It’s me CheChe ,,.. you know I am also playing music of the 60s .. Beatles, Stones, ELO, Gensis (70s) ... YES .... we are four ... my son (who grew up seeing me play with my pals in my band in Maracaibo) is now the drummer ... he is a n excellent musician.  Very talented and plays many instruments and sings beautifully ... incredible ear for harmonies ... very talented indeed.
Today we have rehearsal .. like any other ole'good rock band .. we play in Eli's garage ... the lead guitar ...the name of the street is 22nd Court ... so that is the name of our band ... 22nd Court ... we have great times finding ourselves ... we have a "gig" in March .. so we are rehearsing for that .. we are also planning to record .. however, we still don't know what ... I'd like to record our own versions of some Beatles ... or even Stones ... we are in Aventura ( North Miami area ... Florida !! ) ..
I have met with Glen Evelyn some times ...and we have done some little music together ... just jamming ...
So ... I'll try to send you some photos of the band ... have to look them up ...
Together with Norman Smith ... in 1964 to 66 ... we formed a band in Mount ... Chains .... it was the first Rock Band of Mount ... (Beatlemania at its peak !!!) ....there was another band but they played calypsos and so ... The Interpreters ... they were good ... leaded by John Abraham ... Terrence Ferreira was the signer ... Norman Smith in the Bass ...later played rhythm guitar and did voices with us ... I was on the bass and voices ... still are !!! ... Norman and I formed Chains ...my brother Gustavo in lead ... Enrique Gomes in drums ...
So .. it has made me very happy to find a musician of the 60s among the Mount Boys who is STILL playing rock 'n roll like I do ... so my salute goes to you with all my heart
So Glen ... Keep on Rock'n man !!!

FW: THE PRIZED KNIGHTS.
From: Glen Mckoy
STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART.
A few years ago my life collapsed around me.
I’d worked myself into exhaustion, around the same time, my father died, my relationships with my work colleagues and loved ones were in turmoil.
Little did I know at the time, out of my greatest despair was to come the greatest gift.
I’d been given a glimpse of a great secret, which came to me, day dreaming, of a book, a Jesuit.
Monk's manuscript from 1912, that continues up to now, as the book " The King of Hearts", this book will become, a hundred-year-old book, in the year 2012.
To some, that year is the end of the world.
To a chosen few, it’s only the beginning.
WELCOME MY AMIGOS/ CLASSMATES/ FRIENDS & FAMILY / MSB SINCE 1912/
ABBEY SCHOOL TRINIDAD,1942-1985/ OLD BOYS CLUB 1942 TO NOW, DEC.2009.
=========================================================
Tales of the "Knights of White Stones" from the book "The King of Hearts" (Chapter X, In the Future of Now).   = THE PRAISED KNIGHTS =

The year 1978, the beginning of the end
The abbey school is closed, in 1984,5?
These are the praised knights, the young and the last of the lost tribe, for they do not know, of the great treasure that lies ahead for them, left by the great and older knights, who went before.
Their day will come in the sun, and they too will shine in the light, they must listen and they must learn well, for it will be a long while before, they will have to perform this final mission, for they will be the club.
All that is written, in the book "the king of hearts", they will hold, in their hands. (from chapter x, the last knight, of "white stones",206x).
Also written, is the reunion of 2042, all who could make it, did.
One of the last knights, gave winter historical tours, to the islands, up to the year 205x, he would always make the mount, a must stop when in Trinidad, for the groups he would bring down.
When ever he reached the castle, he would sit down and laugh, they made it up the hill, then he would, shed a tear or two, for a second, and then tell his great mysterious stories, and tales of this place, his brothers called the castle, how great gentlemen, they all were, who once attended this fine institution.
The Abbey School, Mount Saint Benedict, Tunapuna, Trinidad. 1942-1984.
Then at the end of the tour, after visiting a room, dedicated to the past students of the abbey school., he would sell copies, of a book , called "the 1st. Knight, a Jesuit monk. " long-live-the-legend.
------------------------------------------------------------------------.
Mission = two-zero-one-two
The knights of light, in a circle of bees, they make their way up to "white-stones".
On a dark moonless night, they dig into a sacred, secret, spot, under torchlight, the chest is removed, and the book is found, and is taken down to the castle, the year is 2012, the alumni is registered, and the tribe becomes visible.
All is shocked, how can an imaginary legend, become so real? And what becomes of the castle? Oh! The best is still to come.
I will meet you there, don't be late, you know the place, the castle/2012/100yrs /later/ Glen Mckoy.

No problem, Chris.
Hi there, Alex. I see you have a new email address, and I've updated my records accordingly.
Happy New year to you both.
To answer your question, Alex:
Bro Vincent (a.k.a. Lionel Roberts) is now an ordained Permanent Deacon of the Catholic Church and a lawyer.
He lives at 2725  66 Terrace South, St. Petersburg FL 33712, USA. His phone number (cell) is (727) 215-9728 and his home number is (727) 865-3993. His email address is lrober17@tampabay.rr.com
Lionel has sent me some old MSB photographs to be scanned and returned to him, so I'll get these done soon and send them out to you guys.
Keep well, and God be with you.
Nigel
(The Circular is anxiously waiting for the photos that are being scanned by Nigel, Bro. Vincent, ed)

Dear Nigel,
Can you help?
I have been having some problems with my computer stuff, only got to this on Friday, and have since discovered the increasing scope of my electronic distress, hence my tardiness.
Also, as a result of the above, your latest update (and correction) expired from 'yousendit' before I could download.
I would appreciate you resending.
I hope my computer behaves itself and lets me in.
All the best for the New Year to you and yours.
Chris.

Jerry,
Well, it all goes hand in hand with the church, if we could have some kind of cooperation, which we though the guys in Trinidad was establishing, with the Abbot, however none of this happened, so it put a wrench in a lot of plans, back to square one,
I hope you understand, what I am trying to say, we can organise something, but we must have permission to do this.
The brothers in Trinidad must also want this, we cannot just do this on our own, it’s a big event, if done well, but for now it’s just a pipe dream.
I am now trying, only this new year, to keep international, and don't involve myself in local politics.
to remain silent on some issues and of course, will support whatever the majority is in favour of.
Good Vibes, respect all my brothers, and must thank all, for the support, they have given, in their own way, over the past many years.
We were trying to establish a home base, which is still possible in Trinidad.
A retired brother, our man in Trinidad, who can keep up with stuff, with Nigel and Ladislao, local events, not someone in charge but a main contact, for international, connections etc., things we need a body to address, representation of the offshore brothers, a help line contact, and for this, we would like to compensate the brother in some small way, a meet and greet, when brothers are visiting from overseas, also a mail box on the mount would be perfect, a small donation. say $50. a year from those who wish to contribute, to keep the wheel in motion, the circular and the list updates etc, and from the circular, we can generate, a small space, on an island in the sun, we call the Office.
Now these are just a few ideas on the table.
Sorry Jerry, you asked me a simple question, well this is my simple answer.
Please send me your comments all.
Glen/2010.
